Why stand up to scapegoating?

When the going gets tough - blame someone else?

American history is cluttered with instances of minority groups-immigrants, African-Americans, women, Latinos, and Jews-taking the heat for economic and social crises.

It is easy to blame someone else for our problems. It takes real courage to instead pursue solutions.

Working towards solutions

Many organizations throughout the country are doing what's hard - and what's right - by advocating for real solutions to the problems Americans face. Below are some of those problems, and ways in which these organizations are making a difference.

Homecare workers have poor working conditions

Homecare workers - like a housekeeper or nanny - work every day without basic benefits or legal protections that most of us have. For instance, they are not guaranteed overtime or sick days. And they're not protected from discrimination or sudden firing.

Support legislation to protect homecare workers!

New York state just passed the first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights to improve working conditions for these workers, who take care of our children, our elderly, and our homes. Now, the group that won this historical victory is turning one state victory into a national campaign. You can help them win by endorsing The National Domestic Workers Alliance's campaign for rights and respect.

The jobless rate is unacceptable

Since December 2007, our economy has lost more than 8 million jobs. Today, more than 26 million Americans are jobless or underemployed. Many of the cut jobs are critically important to our local communities - teachers, police, firefighters, and childcare workers. One in four minority workers cannot find the amount of work they want.

Create green jobs by supporting Home Star!

Jewish Funds for Justice and other faith organizations are advocating for Home Star, federal legislation that would create 168,000 living-wage jobs that can’t be shipped overseas. You can help make bill law by urging your representatives to support Home Star and other job creation programs.

Restore essential community services!

More than 300 organizations are advocating for federal legislation that would put a million people to work by restoring essential services in local communities. You can help make this bill law by urging your representatives to support The Local Jobs for America Act and other job creation programs.

Families lack long-term financial stability

One in three children grow up in families that lack the financial assets to weather an emergency (like job loss) or make investments in their future (like saving for college).

Support long-term investment with the ASPIRE Act!

Dozens of organizations are advocating for the ASPIRE Act, which would provide every child born in the United States with a $500 savings account. When they are adults, they can use the money to pay for education, a first home, or retirement. You can help make this bill law by urging your representatives to co-sponsor The ASPIRE Act.

Women earn less money for doing the same work

There is a $10,000 average pay gap between women and men. With a record number of women in the workforce, this paycheck discrimination hurts the majority of American families who lose out on badly needed income.

Advocate for the Paycheck Fairness Act!

The National Women's Law Center and other national organizations are advocating for the Paycheck Fairness Act, which President Obama describes as "a common-sense bill that will help ensure that men and women who do equal work receive the equal pay that they and their families deserve." You can help make this bill law by urging your Representatives to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.
